More About Sealants

Although brushing and flossing are important ways to help prevent cavities, it’s not always possible for your kids to adequately clean all those tiny spaces between the teeth— specifically the back molars that are used to chew and can become a hiding spot for leftover food. Why your child may need sealants:
Helps stop early stages of decay from turning into aggressive cavities
Saves money in the long term as your child is less likely to require more costly treatments
Reduces pain and sensitivity
Sealants are a thin, insulating layer (generally made from plastic resin) that stick to the chewing surface of the back teeth and smooth them out.
Sealing your child’s teeth as they come in can act as a proactive solution to a healthier smile. It’s in your child’s best interest to have a sealant put in when their first and second set of molars are beginning to come through (age 5-7 and age 11-14) to ensure their protection from damage and possible decay. A 2016 report released by the Centers for Disease Control on the importance of sealants for children stated that, “school-age children without sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with sealants.”

Common Questions

Why do I need sealants?
Sealants are thin layers that coat the teeth to protect against food and other particles that can cause tooth decay. They are typically applied to adult molars, which are especially susceptible to decay because of their placement in the mouth and crevices that hold onto food.
Can sealants act as a replacement for oral care?
Definitely not! Even if you have a sealant applied to a tooth you still need to practice proper brushing and flossing techniques for all areas of the mouth.
